NRI education loan questions
Can an NRI parent take an education loan for their child?
Yes, usually with the student as the main borrower and the NRI parent or guardian as co-applicant. Lenders look at the student's admission, the course and institution, and the co-applicant's income and credit history. Some lenders also require a resident Indian co-applicant or guarantor. If the student is under 18, the parent or guardian may need to be the borrower. Policies vary by lender and by whether the course is in India or abroad.
Is collateral required?
It depends on the amount, the lender and the course. Many lenders lend smaller amounts, up to about ₹[XX] lakh, without collateral, relying on the co-applicant's income. Above that, they usually ask for security such as residential property, fixed deposits or insurance policies. Some lenders offer higher unsecured limits for top-ranked institutions. Your advisor will compare lenders' thresholds for your course.
Does the loan cover studies abroad?
Yes. Many lenders finance studies abroad at recognised institutions, including undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses. Loans usually cover tuition, accommodation and living costs, travel, and often books, a laptop and equipment, up to the lender's limit. Some lenders favour certain countries and institutions. You will need the admission letter, a cost estimate from the institution and, for study abroad, visa documents before final disbursement.
When does repayment start?
Education loans usually have a repayment holiday (moratorium) for the course and [6 to 12 months] after it ends, or until the student starts working, whichever is earlier, subject to lender policy. Interest generally accrues during this period. Some lenders ask for simple interest to be paid during the course; paying it reduces the final cost. Repayment then runs over [X years]. Check your sanction letter for the exact terms.
Are there tax benefits?
Indian tax law has allowed a deduction for interest paid on education loans for higher studies, subject to conditions, for a limited number of years, but only if the person repaying has taxable income in India and the loan is from an approved lender. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the earlier Act from April 2026, so check current section numbers and conditions. Please take advice from a tax professional on your situation.
